The last young person to attempt to get a class with me literally used AI to create an English language essay about ecology. I mean, you can’t really argue with the content. It said all the things you need to understand because it does understand everything we understand and does condense everything down to the sound bites that we understand the stuff in. Nobody is saying that artificial intelligence isn’t intelligent. The point was that I was asking him to tell me his point of view using his own words to do it. That was the exercise. It was supposed to be about a human being creating language not being clever enough to know how to click exactly the right button to produce text.

Personally, I can’t see any purpose in it. I can’t see any purpose in taking away our ability to think. As an educator and as an educated person, the value judgment necessary even to click on Google and take the trouble to glance even at 3 or 5 ideas that end up in front of your face is at least making a rational judgment. That’s a very good thing to practice. Making good choices for yourself certainly would seem to start with choosing your own words to work with. Letting others, people or artificial people, do your work for you might be a way to make more money but it’s no way to become a better human being. To go in that direction, you pretty much always have to do your own work.
